Maarten from Belgium asks Matt Cutts of the Google Webmaster Central Forum the question about how Google determines domain age? By looking at the whois data or do they rely on the crawler bots checking out the site? Also, how important is it for website authority?
WHOIS is a database of information that stores a domain names registrar with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). This information is publicly available to anyone who wants to check domain names using the WHOIS search tool. However, this information is not always publicly available if the registrar has chosen to make their information private, and as such it can sometimes be unreliable.
So, according to Matt age of a domain is not the only factor that will determine authority. As long as you domain has been around for a few months then you will get some sort of ranking in Google.
The idea you may have heard about domain age being a very important factor to gaining authority with Google is just a myth. Google takes into account a lot of different components of a website, of which a lot of them they don’t share with anyone. Having an old age domain is an advantage but it still requires good content to support it, and content that is relevant to both the user and the aged domain.
There is no point getting an aged domain in dog training ( for example ) and then putting content on it about racing cars, you wont make any money online with that site!
Check out the following video and hear Matt Cutts talk about domain age, ranking and authority sites in greater detail.
